Kepler was the father of astronomy, that is why the satellite that spots planets on different systems is called the Kepler. This telescope was retired back in 2018, despite that fact, scientists were re-checking the data that it had collected during his years of exploration. They found out, about 6 months ago, that Kepler spotted a planet similar in size and temperature to the Earth. This planet is 300 light-years from us, it is only 1.06 bigger than earth and it gets about 75% of the light we get from our sun.
The problem is that, obviously, it is not orbiting the sun. It is orbiting a red dwarf (a smaller and colder star), which would make life in such planet very challenging. Also, we know very little about that planet and there are many factors that we need to know to call it habitable. It needs a breathable atmosphere, it needs water in some way, it needs the right amount of starlight and the right star… But hey, although this may not serve us as a going away planet, it certainly serves us as hope.
We live in a huge galaxy and we have explored very little of it. We have only found around 4000 planets and only 20 out of those are similar to earth in some ways. We are surrounded by billions of planets and stars, if we have 4000 and 20 are potentially habitable, imagine how many more planets are to be discovered and how many could be close to our precious earth.
