The first U.S. woman in space was Sally Ride, born in 26 May 1951 in Los Angeles. She is notorious for designing cosmic history. When Sally started her profesional career she never contemplated employment for Nasa, since it was not normal at the time to see a woman working and even in the space industry. It was at the beginning of 1977 when Nasa began to open up a contract for women. She joined the astronaut training program in 1978, taking into account the fact that there were 58 males and only 8 females. Among all the other girls, she was the one chosen to go on a space project. She took off in June 18th, 1983. Sally made a reference to the atmosphere while she was in space. It was such a delicate thing, she said, and we were all dependent on it. For me and like many others, man or woman, Sally Ride was an inspiration not just for her efforts but also for making woman from her time believe that they could literally go anywhere with persistence and as long as they submitted to what they love.
